COMM 2010 Oral Communication

Course description

The course focuses on face-to-face, public communication, but the principles and practices addressed transfer to all purposeful communication situations. While many assume a good speech rests in how well it is delivered, students will learn that a good speech is equally dependent on the development, structure, and integrity of one’s ideas. The objectives of the course are for students to speak effectively and ethically, and listen critically. Outcome 1: Become better speakers through the practice of choosing and narrowing audience appropriate topics, researching through information competency skills, organizing, developing, and delivering public speeches. Outcome 2: Use wording that is clear, concise, accurate, and interesting. Outcome 3: Enhance skills of memory and familiarity. Outcome 4: Create and apply criteria of effective public speaking. Outcome 5: Create, prepare, and deliver public speeches. Outcome 6: Consider ethics of public speaking. Outcome 7: Develop a deeper understanding of speeches as a collaboration between speaker and audience. Outcome 8: Help others to become better speakers and listeners through observation, collaboration, and constructive criticism.
