ENGL 2090 Introduction to Cultural Studies
Why study popular culture? Although it is often equated with mass culture and perceived to be unworthy of academic study, this course argues that popular culture is an important site for the production of both pleasure and politics. To develop this approach, we will proceed through a series of units, each of which represents an important area in cultural studies’ theories of the popular, all of which negotiate the relationship between the textual and the material. We will see how these theories work when applied to many different kinds of popular culture, including film, fashion, television, fan fiction and fan videos, commodity activism, and music.
