Shoals Marine Laboratory

May 24-August 19, 2019

The Shoals Marine Laboratory (SML) on Appledore Island, Maine, is a seasonal field station jointly operated by Cornell University and the University of New Hampshire. SML offers undergraduates, high school students, graduate students, and teachers a unique opportunity to study marine science in a setting where the ocean is just outside the door. Gain hands-on field and laboratory experience with world-class faculty.

Located about six miles off the Maine and New Hampshire coastline, ninety-nine-acre Appledore Island is remote yet accessible via a one-hour boat ride from Portsmouth, New Hampshire. Appledore and other Isles of Shoals are home to migratory birds, a diverse marine invertebrate community, and hundreds of harbor and gray seals. SML students are immersed in the study of marine science and sustainability, fostered by the island community.

Undergraduate Courses

Students choose one, two, or more courses from the SML website. Courses range from seven to seventeen days and are taken one at a time.

SML courses emphasize intertidal and subtidal ecology, seabird and marine mammal ecology, marine conservation, underwater research, forensic science, animal behavior, ornithology, sustainable fisheries, marine conservation, and more. Biology internships and sustainable engineering internships are also available to undergraduates; see the SML website for details.

The program fee includes tuition, room, board, lab fee, and all required field trips. See courses and course descriptions on the SML site. Scholarships are available to undergraduates; see the SML website for details.
