Step 1: Create an account

Before using the online application for the first time, you must create an account.

Step 2: Application procedure

First, review the important information on the Eligibility page.

Next, log into your account to submit the following materials, in English:

  • A 300-word essay explaining why you would like to participate in this program,
  • One recommendation from a professor who has had you in class,
  • Your official IELTS, CET, or TOEFL test scores, and
  • Your $100 nonrefundable application fee

The following items must be submitted via email ( or fax (607.255.9697):

  • An I-20 Request Form (fillable PDF) and a photocopy of the photo page of your passport, and
  • Your official college transcript

If requested by the admissions committee, you must also complete an interview (over the Internet) with the program director.

Application deadline: All application materials and the nonrefundable application fee are due by the deadline of April 2, 2019. A limited number of applications may be received after this deadline if space is available and the director approves.

Step 3: Enrollment procedure

Once accepted into CPIU, you will receive an email with instructions on how to complete your enrollment. These steps will include:

  • Making full payment of the program charge,
  • Obtaining an F-1 student visa*,
  • Activating your NetID**, and then
  • Submitting the Health History and Immunization Compliance form and supporting documentation. (Immunizations are not required for three-week students.

The Cornell Program for International Undergraduates expects all applicants to complete their application materials without the use of paid agents, credentials services, or other paid professional assistance. The use of such services violates Cornell University policy and may lead to the rejection of application materials, the revocation of an admissions offer, cancellation of admission, or involuntary withdrawal from the program.

*The F-1 student visa requires that students studying in the United States be fluent in written and spoken English. This proficiency is critical to students' success at Cornell. Note: To be eligible for this visa, students must register for at least six credits for the six-week session or three credits for the three-week session.

You will receive an email when the I-20 is mailed to you. We will add the SEVIS number, Cornell's school code, and the express mail tracking number to your Student Services account the day we mail you the I-20, so you can track the form if you wish. To ensure the fastest delivery, be sure to provide us with an accurate and complete mailing address, including the postal code and your current phone number.

As soon as you receive your I-20, we suggest that you take this form, along with a copy of your admissions acceptance letter, to the U.S. embassy or consulate. Using these materials, you will apply for an F-1 student visa.

This is a lengthy process. We encourage you to begin your application as soon as possible. We cannot be responsible for delays in receiving visa documents or difficulties with scheduling appointments with your U.S. embassy or consulate.

**You will receive instructions for activating your NetID once you have made full payment for the program.
